What Is a Crunchy Squishy and How Long Does the Crunch Last?
A crunchy squishy makes a noise when you squeeze it, and whether you hear that noise once or every time depends on what sits under the skin. One build breaks like the sugar top on a crème brûlée and then goes quiet. The other rustles like a bag of crisps for as long as you keep squeezing.
Quick answer
There are two builds. A wax shell cracks loudly on the first squeeze and then stays quiet, with something soft left underneath. A crackle filling of tiny bits makes noise with every squeeze. Read the product text to find out which one you're getting, because the name alone rarely says.
Wax shell or crackle filling?
The shell build is the one that made the trend famous. A thin layer of wax or a crispy skin sits on a soft core and breaks the first time you press it.
The filling build has nothing to break. Tiny pieces inside rub against each other whenever you press, and that rubbing is the sound you hear. Sellers call both builds "crunchy", our crunchy squishy collection included, so here's what the product texts actually say.
| Squishy | Build | What makes the noise | How long, per product text |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrot | crispy skin | skin over PU foam cracks | cracks with a crunch, the lines stay |
| Mango | crackle filling | small textured pieces | every time you squeeze |
| Caramel pudding | crackle filling | tiny beads | every time you squeeze |
| Pineapple bun | crackle filling | soft clay with micro building blocks | with every squeeze |
| Highland cow | crackle filling | plastic block pieces | a loud creak, no time given |
| Peanut, corn, potato, orange | not stated | the text only says it crunches | not stated |
Everything in this table comes from the makers' product descriptions. Three more pieces crackle from a filling too, according to their texts.

So right now most of our crunchy squishies are the filling build. The crunchy mango is a typical one. You can fold it or press it flat and the crunch keeps coming from inside.
How long does a crunchy squishy crunch?
A wax shell gives you its best sound on the first squeeze. After that it lies in pieces on the soft core and there is little left to crack.

Our crunchy carrot shows the shell idea on a vegetable. Squeeze it along its length and the crispy skin cracks. Fine lines stay on the surface, so every carrot ends up looking a little different, and the PU foam underneath keeps rising back slowly long after the crunch.
How many squeezes until a shell goes fully silent? No maker gives a number, and nobody has measured it properly yet.
Squishies with a crackle filling keep going, at least according to their texts. The caramel pudding crunches every time you squeeze and stays in whatever shape you leave it in. Whether it still sounds just as crisp after three months in a pencil case is something we honestly can't tell you yet.
Want it to crackle for a long time? Pick a filling. If you're after that one big crack from the videos, you need a wax shell, and we don't have one in the shop right now.
Try it yourself
Squeeze it twice next to your ear and compare. If the second squeeze is much quieter than the first, you're holding a shell. If both sound the same, the noise comes from the filling.
Why is crunchy butter everywhere right now?
A cracking shell is something you can hear through a phone speaker, so the trend spread through short videos and social networks. Worldwide Google searches for "crunchy squishy" were still at 95% of their September peak on 26 October 2026, and in Sweden's Amazon shop crunchy and wax squishies made up 29% of page-one purchases that month.
The newest mix is crunchy butter. In October 2026 "crunchy butter squishy" showed up among Google's rising searches in the US. Google suggested "squishy crunchy butter" in Germany as well, and people in France typed "squishy qui craque butter". Searches for plain butter squishies were still at 88% of their own peak at the same time.
A single crunchy butter stick isn't in our shop right now. Our handmade crunchy squishy set has two butter sticks in pink and yellow, though, next to six other shapes. They have a TPR shell with a crackling filling. For the quiet kind, read our guide to the butter squishy trend.
Wax bits, small kids and cracks that aren't a fault
Wax shells leave flakes behind. They end up on the desk and on the floor, where a crawling toddler can find them before you do.
Careful
Sweep up wax flakes straight away and keep them away from small children. Our crunchy squishies are marked "not suitable for children under 3" in their product texts, often because of small parts. Don't bite them or cut them open.
The highland cow shows why the filling matters. Its maker asks you not to bite it or cut it open, and there are tiny plastic building blocks inside.
The crack of a wax shell is meant to happen and isn't a fault. Send us photos within 14 days to support@squishyvault.com if the skin arrives torn or you got the wrong item.

FAQ
What happens if the skin of a crunchy squishy tears?
Then the filling can come out, and with some squishies that means beads or tiny building blocks. How easily the skins tear is something nobody has measured. If one tears, take it away from younger siblings, pick up every bit and throw the squishy out rather than taping it up.
Does the wax crumble or stick?
It breaks into flakes, which is the whole idea. Whether those flakes smear or stick to a carpet isn't stated anywhere we could check. Our practical tip is to crack a wax squishy over a table and wipe the bits up right away.
Is crispy the same as crunchy?
Mostly yes. Sellers swap the two words freely, and "wax cracking" usually means the shell build. How crunchy compares with foam or gel is in our types of squishies guide.
Can you wash a crunchy squishy?
Only some of them, according to their texts. The peanut and its three siblings from the same series may be rinsed under running water or washed with a little soap. The other product texts say nothing about washing, so we can't promise anything for those.
Do you ship to Australia and New Zealand?
Yes, along with most EU countries, in 7 to 15 business days. Details are on the shipping page.
