Dumpling Squishy Types and Sizes, and Why Foam Beats Gel

A dumpling squishy is a soft toy shaped like a bao bun with folds on top. Most are foam or rubbery TPR, and some have a gel filling inside. For a child that last part matters more than the face or the colour.

Quick answer

Two things caused the 2026 dumpling warnings, gel or water bead fillings and too much benzene in the skin. Foam and TPR without filling rule out the first one. For the second, look for a named maker, check the recall lists and smell it when you unpack it. Sizes run from 6 cm minis to 18 cm buns.

Want one right away? Here are all dumpling squishies in our shop.

Dumpling squishy types at a glance

Most dumpling squishies fall into six kinds. The shape stays the same, a round bun with pleats, but the material and the feel change a lot.

Chart of six dumpling squishy types, foam bun, bao in a basket, animal dumpling, glitter dumpling, gel dumpling and mini dumpling
Six kinds, one shape
Type Made of Feels like Good to know
Foam bun PU foam soft, the dent fills back slowly nothing can leak
Bao in a basket soft TPR rubbery, springs back often comes in a little steamer
Animal dumpling PU foam or TPR like a foam bun seal, cat or chick faces
Glitter dumpling clear skin, glitter smooth and heavy check what the filling is
Gel dumpling skin with gel wobbly, bulges sideways can burst, never heat it
Mini dumpling TPR or foam small and firm small parts, not under 3

Bun or dumpling? Same shape, two names. The product description or the label should tell you the material.

What's inside, and why the skin matters too

Inside How it feels Risk from the filling
PU foam soft, keeps a dent, rises back slowly nothing that can leak
TPR, no filling rubbery, springs back at once nothing that can leak
Gel or liquid heavy, wobbly, stretches thin can burst, burns after heating (France)
Water beads small balls you can feel rolling swell up if swallowed (US recalls)

Water beads are the most dangerous filling because they keep swelling after a child swallows them.

"The water beads inside the dumplings expand larger than permitted, posing a deadly ingestion hazard."

CPSC, recall 26-737, 3 September 2026

The second risk sits in the skin. The UK recall and the Cornwall warning were about too much benzene in the outer layer, and neither named a filling. Stiftung Warentest, the German consumer testing body, calls benzene carcinogenic. It escapes into the air and can cause a chemical smell. A strong smell is a warning sign, but your nose can't tell how much benzene is there. A foam bun can carry this problem too, and squeezing won't reveal it.

Careful

Gel-filled dumplings don't belong with toddlers. Don't bite into one or cut it open. Never warm it in the microwave or on a radiator.

Why were dumpling squishies recalled?

Seven of the ten squishy reports from 2026 in our safety guide name dumplings or buns. Six of them are below, and none came from Australia or New Zealand. The third column shows where the problem was.

Date Country What happened Source
late June 2026 UK Skin: "Squeezy Dumplings" recalled for too much benzene Trading Standards
Aug 2026 France Filling and heat: DGCCRF warns of burst squishies and burns avis-parents
27 Aug 2026 UK Skin: Cornwall Trading Standards warns about benzene in the outer layer Cornwall Council
3 Sept 2026 US Filling: about 7,200 buns with water beads recalled CPSC 26-737
26 Sept 2026 Germany Both: Stiftung Warentest warns of unsafe dumplings test.de
7 Oct 2026 Germany Skin and labelling: dumplings on Safety Gate Verbraucherzentrale

In September the Dutch NVWA tested 19 squishies, found only small amounts of volatile substances and judged them safe for children. That covers those 19 toys and says nothing about the UK benzene case. All ten reports are in Are squishies safe?

To check a squishy you own, search the official lists for its name or maker. In the EU that's Safety Gate. New Zealand has Product Safety New Zealand and Australia has Product Safety Australia. If a child has swallowed a water bead, go to a doctor straight away and don't wait for symptoms.

Have you tested your own squishies for benzene?

No. We have no lab results of our own. All we have is what the maker states on the product page, and that says nothing about benzene.

So check it yourself when you unpack it. A faint smell straight out of the bag can be aired out, as the NVWA advises. A strong chemical or petrol smell is different. Don't give that squishy to a child. Take photos and email them to support@squishyvault.com within 14 days.

Which dumpling squishy for which age?

This list only has squishies whose product text says foam or TPR with no filling. Material and age are the maker's specs. Where the maker gives no age at all, we only suggest it for teens and adults, because nobody has said it suits younger kids.

Squishy Material Age set by the maker Our advice
Chick bao, 3 buns TPR, no gel not under 3 (small parts) children from 3
Round bun, 6 cm PU foam not under 3 children from 3
Seal dumpling PU foam, no gel not given teens and adults
Steamed bun, 9 cm PU foam, no gel not given teens and adults
Cat bun PU foam 14 and up teens and adults
Chick Bao Squishy, 3 Buns in Steamer BasketChick Bao Squishy, 3 Buns in Steamer BasketView

So for a 10-year-old the chick bao or the round bun fit best. Our age guide keeps gel and oil fillings for 11 and up. Even then, the rule is no biting and no heating.

Dumpling squishy sizes, from mini to XXL

Our bun squishies give a good scale, from a 6 cm roll that fits in a fist to an 18 cm bun for both hands.

Four dumpling squishies drawn to scale on a ruler, mini 6 cm, standard 9 cm, big 12 cm and XXL 18 cm
Drawn to scale, measured across
Size Width Example from our range
Mini about 6 cm (2.4 in) round bun
Standard about 9 cm (3.5 in) steamed bun
Big about 12 cm (4.7 in) pineapple bun, large size
XXL about 18 cm (7.1 in) coconut cream bun, long size

All widths are the maker's specs. The long coconut cream bun is 18.5 x 7.7 cm and weighs about 80 g. A standard bun sits in one hand. Anything bigger than 12 cm needs both.

How to clean a dumpling squishy

Dab foam with a damp cloth and give rubbery TPR a quick rinse under the tap. Never soak foam.

Damp cloth, a drop of soap, air dry
  1. Mix lukewarm water with one drop of mild soap.
  2. Foam: dab the surface with the damp cloth. Don't soak it or wring it out.
  3. TPR: rinse it under clear water.
  4. Rinse the soap off and pat it dry with a towel.
  5. Let it air dry until it no longer feels cool or damp. Foam takes a lot longer than TPR.

Still sticky after washing? Our care and repair guide has the tissue test for leaks.

How do I spot a safer dumpling squishy?

In a shop, feel for little balls or liquid moving inside. A strong chemical smell or cracks are reasons to put it back. Online, look for the material and an age. A maker with an address matters too. A CE mark alone isn't enough, because squishies with one still end up on Safety Gate.

Try it yourself

Press the squishy slowly with your thumb and count to three. Foam keeps the dent and fills back in. TPR without filling springs back right away. If it bulges somewhere else or you feel something rolling, there's a filling inside.

The US food site Sporked wrote in June 2026 that the first squishy dumplings came from a brand called RMS International and that copies followed soon after. We don't sell RMS dumplings, and we found no official guide to spotting fakes.

Butter, dumpling or mochi squishy?

People mix these three up because all of them look like soft food or a blob. Butter squishies are blocks or sticks and mostly foam. Mochi squishies are small round TPR figures that bounce back fast.

FAQ

Can I warm a dumpling squishy in the microwave?

No. Stiftung Warentest warns that a microwaved squishy can burst when squeezed and cause serious burns. Keep every squishy away from heat.

Do dumpling squishies smell?

Some do, foam ones included. A faint smell can be aired out. A strong chemical or petrol smell is a reason not to give it to a child.

What's the biggest dumpling squishy you sell?

Our biggest pleated dumpling is the steamed bun at about 9 cm. If any big bun will do, the long coconut cream bun is 18.5 cm.
