What Is a Butter Squishy? Foam, Gel and the New Crunchy Kind

A butter squishy is a squishy shaped like a stick of butter, and the filling decides whether it feels like cold butter straight from the fridge or butter that sat in the sun all afternoon. The shape stays the same. What's inside changes everything.

Quick answer

Butter is a shape and not a material. You'll find it as soft foam that rises back slowly and as rubbery plastic that bounces back at once. Some have a shell with gel that simply stays squashed, and the newest ones crackle. Gel butters must never get hot or be cut open, and they're not for small children.

Want one right away? Here are all butter squishies in our shop.

What is a butter squishy made of?

Four builds hide behind the same yellow block. They feel so different that two butters on one shelf can have nothing in common except the colour.

Five kinds of butter squishy
Build How it feels Comes back? Watch out
Soft foam light, gives way like soft butter slowly, over a few seconds can smell at first, air it out
Soft plastic or TPR dense and rubbery quickly minis are small parts
Shell with gel heavy and smooth, like thick jelly barely, stays how you press it never heat it, cut it or bite it
Crunchy crackles under your thumb depends on the filling a wax shell only cracks once

Feel and rebound for our own products come from the maker's descriptions. Butter and cheese share a shelf with the rest of the breakfast table in our food squishy collection.

Try it yourself

Press your thumb into a butter squishy for three seconds and count after you let go. Foam fills the dent in slowly. TPR jumps straight back. Gel keeps the dent until you knead it away.

Why is everyone searching for butter squishies?

Butter is the second big squishy wave of 2026 after dumplings. Worldwide Google Trends searches for "butter squishy" peaked in the week of 20 to 26 September 2026. A month later, on 26 October, they still sat at 88 % of that peak. Dumpling squishies had dropped to 60 % of theirs by then, so the butter wave is still running.

Every country types its own butter. On 25 October Google suggested 13 searches with "mantequilla" in Spain, from "squishy mantequilla viral" to paper versions you make yourself. Italians type "burro" and Poles type "masło" or "masło gniotek". In Ireland Google offered "squishy butter stick".

The newest word is "crunchy butter". Google already suggested it in Germany and Denmark. Sweden had it too, and in the US "crunchy butter squishy" is a rising search.

Crunchy butter, the newest twist

A crunchy butter looks like any other butter stick until you squeeze it. Then it crackles.

Our crunchy squishy set has two butter sticks in pink and yellow among its eight handmade pieces. Every piece has a TPR shell and a filling that crackles when you squeeze it.

Prefer your butter baked? The crunchy croissant is golden with deep flaky folds and fills an adult hand. Tiny building block pieces inside crackle a bit like biting into real pastry.

Not every crunchy squishy works the same way, though. Some have a wax shell that breaks on the first squeeze and then stays quiet. Our guide to crunchy squishies explains which kind keeps its sound.

Butter and cheese, one family

Butter and cheese belong together, and searchers treat them as a pair. In all eight countries we checked on 25 October Google suggested butter and cheese squishies side by side. Australia added "squishy jumbo cheese".

Dumplings get mixed up with butter all the time. Our dumpling squishy guide explains the six kinds and their sizes.

The TPR cheese wedge comes in two versions. The mini is a thin solid triangle that fits between two fingers. The bigger wedge has deep holes and a matte flour finish with enough body to press flat.

The soft plastic cheese wedge is round-holed all over and gives way under your thumb. Pick the regular one or the big one. And butter even turns up as a topping. Our jumbo waffle squishy has a square of it in the middle and measures 11.5 × 4 cm (about 4.5 × 1.6 in).

Vaseline butter and gel cheese

Then there's the gel kind. People call it "vaseline cheese", and Google suggested that search everywhere from Australia to Finland in October. Denmark even added "vaseline butter".

Our jumbo jelly cheese is that type. It's a big see-through cube with a glossy shell and a petroleum jelly filling. Squeeze it hard and it turns dense and smooth. Pinch a corner and the corner stays pinched until you reshape it.

Careful

Gel squishies must never get warm, so keep them off the heater and out of the microwave. Never cut one open or bite it, and keep it away from small children. In August 2026 France's consumer authority DGCCRF warned about squishies that burst and caused burns after use (DGCCRF).

Most squishy trouble we collected for 2026 came from gel or water bead fillings and from heat. Foam and silicone were much calmer. Our overview of types of squishies sorts every build by that risk.

How to spot a cheap butter squishy

A cheap butter often gives itself away before you squeeze it. New foam can smell chemical straight out of the bag. In September 2026 the Dutch authority NVWA tested 19 squishies, found small amounts of volatile chemicals and advised airing them out (NL Times).

Then look at the label. You want an age warning and the name of a maker or importer. In October 2026 Germany's consumer advice centre listed missing maker details among the problems with squishy dumplings and buns (Verbraucherzentrale).

A glossy, wet look is a style. A surface that turns tacky after a few weeks is a flaw, however trendy the shape.

FAQ

Are butter squishies OK for kids?

Foam butters with a fitting age label are the calmer choice for kids. Check the label on every piece. Our TPR cheese wedge, for example, is not suitable for children under 3 because of small parts. Gel butters are for older kids and adults who won't bite or cut them.

Does a crunchy butter squishy keep crunching?

It depends on what makes the noise. A wax shell cracks once and is done. For our crunchy set the maker says every piece crackles when squeezed. How many squeezes that lasts, nobody has cleanly measured yet.

Is a butter squishy the same as a slow rising squishy?

Only when it's made of foam. Slow rising describes how a squishy comes back, while butter only describes the shape. A gel butter is the opposite of slow rising because it hardly comes back at all.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery takes 7–15 working days from our partner warehouse. We ship to most EU countries as well as Australia and New Zealand. There the shop shows prices in AUD or NZD. Details are on our shipping page.
